Artist's Toolkit with Laura Brown of EvaRay Studios

Welcome to the Artist’s toolkit.

A place for practical tips to inspire your creative journey.

Each month i will ask one of the artists teaching a class to share five tips on how they paint/draw or make.

This month i asked Kent based artist, Laura Brown or EvaRay Studios to share some of her soft pastel secrets.

Here they are.

Enjoy!

  1. Take time to plan your colour palette. I like to set aside my pastels and make a swatch palette on paper to help me stick to my original idea.

2. Keep kitchen roll handy to clean your oil pastels or sticks in between use.

3. Make a colour chart with the names of the colours. There are lots to choose from and this will make ordering in the future much quicker!

4. Experiment with a translucent stick when using oil sticks. It thins out the colours and makes mixing colours together easier.

5. Soft pastels are great for your initial sketches and easy to transport. I love using pastelmat coloured papers and unison soft pastels.
